Both synthetic and petroleum-based oils have their place in gas compressor applications. In cases where a synthetic lubricant is not needed or would constitute over-engineering, customers fear the presence of impurities common to many mineral base stocks. Those impurities can react with components of the gas stream to form by-products harmful to the compressor system.
