If you’re not familiar with perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) lubricants, they are chemically inert and capable of handling extreme temperatures and hazardous operating environments.
What started out as a synthetic solution for the extreme conditions of the aerospace industry – like deep space – is now commonly being used in other bearings and guides operating under extreme temperatures. Traditional synthetic lubricants handle temperatures up to 180°C (356°F) in the best cases, while PFPE lubricants regularly handle temperatures up to 260°C (500°F). And they are just as effective in cold temps, some withstanding temperatures down to -80°C (-112°F). Other benefits of PFPE oils include:
- Non-flammable and oils are colorless
- Non-toxic (can be NSF H1 food grade)
- Low volatility (vacuum stability)
- High viscosity index
- Excellent material compatibility
PFPE is the clear solution for the most demanding environments, but not all PFPEs are created equal. Differences in raw materials can drastically affect price and performance.
Klüber Lubrication has one of the most diversified PFPE product portfolios in the market with three different product lines suitable for different applications and environments:
Klübertemp is a white, homogeneous long-term grease based on a PFPE and a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thickener. It offers good corrosion protection and high evaporation stability, especially for high-temperature applications. Its service temperature ranges from -80°C (-112°F) to 260°C (500°F).
BARRIERTA is Klüber Lubrication’s longest running, high-quality brand of PFPE lubricants made from clearly specified raw materials. The name of BARRIERTA is synonymous with long-term stability and thermal resistance. Its service temperature ranges from -65°C (-85°F) to 260°C (500°F).
Klüberalfa PFPE lubricants have been developed for specific applications where optimum performance under lifetime lubrication conditions is required. The calculated speed factor sets new standards in the formulation of high-temperature PFPE greases with PTFE thickeners. Its service temperature ranges from -80°C (-112°F) to 300°C (572°F).
