The Path

Behind us is a rich history in caring for the earth. It began in 1993 with a Quality certification that has led to global certifications in health, safety and the environment. It continues today with customers who saved approximately 38,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2020.

We know where we’ve been, we know where we are and we know where we’re going, as we develop new products and processes that respond to the ever-changing environmental landscape. To that end, Klüber Lubrication is directing our path toward sustainability with the accountability of an internally developed Sustainability Scorecard and the guidance of the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Taking a holistic approach, the 17 goals reflect the variety of efforts that both directly and indirectly support sustainability. As the UN says, “ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”

The bottom line is that every action counts.

And we identified that we can contribute directly to these 3 of the 17 goals:

  • SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • SDG 13: Climate action
  • SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

The Processes

With that focus in mind, we’ve identified categories in our work that fall under the umbrella of those three SDGs. Those categories include materials, waste, energy, emissions, water and health/safety, and the impact happens in three ways:

  1. Responsible sourcing: We partner with our suppliers to ethically source materials and improve our raw material footprint.
  2. Efficient processes: We continually monitor and evaluate our processes, substituting green energy when possible.
  3. Prioritizing tomorrow, today: We manage our existing portfolio and plan new developments with our goals in mind. Underscoring all three of those is innovation. If we aren’t paying attention and thinking creatively, we will be stuck on old paths and familiar habits.

The Impact

The impact is illustrated by our Footprint-Handprint matrix. The Footprint is how Klüber Lubrication minimizes any negative impact, and the Handprint is how our lubricants empower customers to achieve their own sustainability targets.
