Specialty lubricants for shipping

Freight and passenger ships are often at sea for weeks or months, withstand extremely harsh environmental conditions, and place extremely high demands on people and equipment. Specialty lubricants are optimally aligned to the shipboard applications, protect against corrosion and wear, and improve the overall efficiency of gears, rudders and propellers. They lubricate propeller shafts and winches, hatches and couplings, to mention just a few examples. Stern tube oil, cable grease and gear oil from Klüber Lubrication share a focus on uncompromising performance, cost optimisation and extremely high standards for environmental protection and safety.

EAL: The next generation

  • Like a mariner once seeking safe harbour, today’s ship managers are searching for environmentally friendly lubricants that match the overall performance of traditional lubricants. Following the introduction of mandatory use of so-called Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) in specific applications on vessels, several lubricant products came onto the market which, although they met the legal requirements, did not achieve the traditional level of performance. The tribologists at Klüber Lubrication have now developed a technology for producing long lasting synthetic oil based lubricants leading to a new generation of EALs that meet both excellent performance and environmental sustainability targets.

Optimal lubricants for numerous applications

Specialty lubricants from Klüber Lubrication are equally at home on the decks of cargo ships and in the engine rooms of cruise liners. Manufacturers, OEMs and operators rely on protection against wear and corrosion, high efficiency and long life at countless lubrication points.

On course for environmental protection and sustainability

At Klüber Lubrication we recognised very early that with environmentally friendly industrial marine lubricants we can make a contribution to waterway protection and ocean conservation. We started developing environmentally friendly lubricants in 2006, and since 2013 they have also been certified as environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) in compliance with the requirements of the Vessel General Permit (VGP). Some EALs in the Klüber portfolio also bear quality marks such as the EU Ecolabel or conform to the OSPAR guidelines and the Polar Code for navigation in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

Efficient in use – economical and cost-optimised

Environmental compatibility and cost optimisation go hand in hand at Klüber Lubrication. Our specialty lubricants are economical in use and designed for durable lubrication and long maintenance intervals. They have high hydrolysis stability and withstand the harshest environmental conditions: salt water, rain, wind, and extreme temperatures. This leads to low lubricant consumption, less downtime due to maintenance and repair, and long component life. For ship operators, this means lower operating costs over the entire life cycle.

At a glance: specialty lubricants for cargo and passenger ships

  • Environmentally compatible – independently certified: Our specialty lubricants fulfil the most stringent environmental specifications and are certified according to VGP, EU Ecolabel, OSPAR, and more.
  • Protection against wear and corrosion – reliable and durable: For long maintenance intervals, high efficiency and long service life.
  • More workplace safety: Adhesive, non-dripping industrial marine lubricants reduce the risk of occupational accidents.

Specialty lubricants for cranes and port facilities

Seawater, rain and high humidity accelerate the corrosion of port facilities and harbour cranes, while cables, winches and gears are exposed to strong forces from wind, waves and tides. Extremely high reliability is required in this situation. Every outage leads to complicated rescheduling and incurs high costs. Klüber Lubrication therefore develops specialty lubricants precisely matched to the demands of ports and locks. They improve performance and efficiency, contribute to safety, and improve sustainability thanks to stringent environmental standards.
