Maintenance costs down, train availability up

Klüber Lubrication to present new specialty lubricants for the rail industry

Munich, 4 August 2022 – At the InnoTrans 2022, Klüber Lubrication will be presenting a range of newly developed and upgraded products aimed at reducing wear, extending maintenance intervals and simplifying application. This can give a real boost to the cost efficiency of rail vehicles.

"Our R&D activities have always been guided by the maxim that new products should offer significantly better performance than previous solutions", explains Thomas Kamprath, Market Manager Rail Industry at Klüber Lubrication.

"In the development of new lubricants, we focus on applications that pose particular challenges."

Grease for train door seals – rapid application, long-term effect

Among the challenges specific to the rail industry are door malfunctions, one of the main causes of rail service disruptions. The new BARRIERTA L 25 DL SPRAY was especially developed for the lubrication of door seals and is characterised by optimal application features: "Especially on the seals of doors, which might come into contact with passengers, the lubricant film should be as thin as possible. The seals should only be covered with a trace of lubricant. This is achievable with BARRIERTA L 25 DL SPRAY, and, what's more, applying this grease to the lube point takes less time", Thomas Kamprath explains.

The new generation of wheel bearing greases – fully synthetic, certified and available worldwide

In wheel bearings of freight cars, requirements for lubricants are tough. Lubricity must be ensured over a wide temperature range as well as at varying speeds and under vibrations. The new, fully synthetic wheel bearing grease Klübersynth BHE 46-403 shows convincing performance in wheel bearings due to its innovative combination of various base oils and matching additives. Klübersynth BHE 46-403 is certified according to DIN EN 12081 and DIN EN 12082 and is available worldwide.

The wheel bearing grease attained a mileage of 800,000 km on the test rig according to DIN EN 12082. Simulations show a potential for relubrication intervals of more than 1.5 million km, or 20 years. This reduces maintenance costs and increase vehicle availability.

Points: locks of low-maintenance roller-supported points also require lubrication

Roller-supported points are increasingly used as low-maintenance alternatives to conventional points. While slide plates in roller-supported points require only infrequent or no lubrication at all, their locks still do. "It is especially for this application that we have developed our Klüberrail AL 32-2000 Spray. It is the first spray-on product that has been approved for railway points. Klüberrail AL 32-2000 Spray is particularly easy to transport - every service team can carry a spray for points with them", Thomas Kamprath describes the product's benefits.

For conventional points, Klüberrail AL 32-2000 is also the obvious lubricant choice. After all, one of the major maintenance tasks of infrastructure providers is to ensure that points operate trouble-free under all weather conditions such as heavy rain, heat or snow. The use of Klüberrail AL 32-2000 improves the reliability of points, with positive effects on smooth train operation.

Oil change intervals doubled

Among the innovative solutions Klüber Lubrication has to offer to the railway sector are several high-performance gear oils contributing to considerably lower maintenance costs. The fully synthetic Klübersynth GE 475 W 90, for example, effectively protects rail vehicle gears even under high loads so that the intervals between time-consuming oil changes can in most cases be doubled. A lubricant that was especially designed for low temperatures is Klübersynth LEG 475 W 90 - its friction coefficient is up to 30 percent lower than that of conventional gear oils.

At the InnoTrans 2022 in hall 21a, stand 440, the experts from Klüber Lubrication will be pleased to answer all questions visitors may have regarding the subject of tribology in railway operation.
