Wind power plants are exposed to major stresses day after day in the form of high alternating loads, vibrations or highly varied operating conditions. On top of all that, there are external factors such as humidity, saline air or extreme temperature fluctuations, which put additional strain on the turbines and associated components. This makes regular maintenance of wind turbines a necessity, which, however, is an arduous task and therefore performed only at sizeable intervals. Consequently, the goal of safeguarding smooth, uninterrupted wind turbine operation remains often more a wish than reality.
What can you do to help your wind turbines withstand the stress factors they are exposed to? Selecting the right oil or grease – for both the initial lubrication of components and their relubrication during operation – is one of the main factors to be observed.
For you as an operator of wind turbines, Klüber Lubrication offers you a range of specialty lubricants specifically designed for wind power generation applications and with a view to pushing the limits of what is technically feasible: Longer component life, longer maintenance intervals, reliable and sustainable operation.
How you will benefit from our comprehensive, globally available product portfolio is something we would like to show you at WindEnergy 2024.

As the wind energy sector keeps growing and the size and performance of today’s wind turbines is increasing, many older wind turbines are meanwhile long past their originally specified service life. Nevertheless, they continue to be operational – in harsh environments, where they are exposed to the elements, extreme temperatures and hence constant ageing stresses day after day. Grease deposits in the generator unit may be the consequence, leading to overheating and auto-switch-off.
Unplanned maintenance works or disruptions to power generation are not only very time-consuming, but will also cause great cost to your company. The focus should therefore be on an optimisation of maintenance in order to reduce costs, increase equipment uptime and hence optimise the profits gained from wind power generation. With this objective in mind, Klüber Lubrication has developed special high-performance lubricants supporting you with more cost efficiency:
Applications: Cleaning and flushing of wind turbine gears.

Applications: Cleaning and deposit removal in generator and main bearings.

Applications: Lubrication of generator or other rolling bearings with oscillating motion, high loads and vibrations

Concern for the environment is mounting. Corporations are feeling a growing need to integrate environmental awareness and social responsibility in the way they conduct business. As regulations are becoming stricter, any leakage is regarded as a major risk. Bearing all these aspects in mind, more and more plant operators tend to opt for sustainable products.
There are, however, other issues, for example energy loss, wear, or the necessity of general overhauls. These matters need to be taken care of to ensure profitable business in the future. The fact that lubricants are a decisive factor for energy-efficient, low-maintenance wind turbine operation is frequently underestimated in this context.
As examples one might cite open yaw gear drives and their bearings: Because of harsh weather conditions and saline air, they have a particular need for products offering excellent lubricity at all conditions and temperatures, enabling the drives to withstand high wear and constant corrosion.
Klüber Lubrication offers innovative specialty lubricants to support you with a growing need for higher performance, energy efficiency and environmental compatibility. The products from our future-driven, application-oriented portfolio will be selected to match your specific equipment in a cooperative approach between partners. This is how Klüber contributes to improving the ecological footprint and attainment of your sustainability goals.
Applications: Lubrication of open gears, rack-and-pinion drives and sliding surfaces.

In March 2024, Klüber Lubrication was for the third time in a row awarded the “gold medal“ by EcoVadis – a leading sustainability rating company. This means we are among the best five percent of the roughly 130,000 that were rated.
Klüber’s contribution to the wind energy sector:
We will also in the future develop new options for extending equipment lifetimes for our joint journey towards climate neutrality.

Local manufacturing – our sustainable services
It’s not just the products made by Klüber Lubrication which can be found worldwide: We also have company sites in the major wind energy markets on all continents, e.g. in Europe, North and South America, and in China. Our local production facilities give us a high ability to supply, and it also helps us to better respond individually – and timely! — to any disruptions in the supply chain.
This offer is another aspect contributing to our and your sustainability goals: Besides heightened customer convenience, our local sourcing significantly reduces transport emissions, improving your ecological footprint.
Preventive maintenance – our oil and grease condition analyses
For a maximisation of component life, the condition of an oil or grease must be known, and the appropriate conclusions be drawn from an analysis. Getting the timing for an oil change right is equally important: If it is done too soon, there will be financial loss.
Klüber has decades of experience in Oil Condition Analysis (OCA) and Grease Condition Analysis (GCA), a profound understanding and expert knowledge of the different turbine models‘ characteristics, and is known and certified as a specialty lubricants supplier with many OEMs. In cooperation with leading bearing manufacturers and wind farm operators, we offer you tailor-made analyses and recommendations. In addition, we develop systems enabling an optimisation of the grease runtime as well as of bearing operating hours in wind turbines. You will find more information on our lubricant condition analyses here.
Predictive planning – our component analyses
As a maintenance engineer, you have to take expensive components such as large gears chains to the limits of their service lives in order to avoid downtime due to repair or replacement and the associated cost. Based on our many years of experience, we support you in minimising both planned and unplanned downtime, and help you organise investments in spare parts better.
One tool we have for attaining this goal is component analysis (root cause analysis). We are using a variety of different technologies to create the basis for better operating conditions and determining the right time for a lubricant exchange. Of course, this service does not stop with the various analyses, but includes also the development of recommendations for action. This keeps your machines in service longer while potential damage can be prevented – also in the future.
