New synthetic hydraulic oils reduce impact on sensitive eco-systems

Long oil change intervals and high reliability even over a wide temperature range

Munich, September 9th, 2014 – In hydraulic systems, leakage is a particularly frequent phenomenon that has not been sufficiently solved to date. Therefore, conventional products based on mineral oil are a permanent threat to sensitive eco-systems. With the development of Klübersynth LR 9 oils, Klüber Lubrication launched a series of synthetic mineral oil-based and readily biodegradable products, offering a performance that is at least equal to that of mineral oil-based products. They comply with the requirements of the 2013 Vessel General Permit defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (Appendix A of the US EPA VGP (Vessel General Permit) 2013) for classification as an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL) and bear the European Ecolabel issued for particularly eco-friendly products. Additionally, the Klüberbio LR 9 oils meet or even exceed the minimum requirements according to ISO 15380, Bosch Rexroth RE 90221-01 and the Swedish Standard SS 15 54 34.

"Our new, highly efficient hydraulic fluids are readily biodegradable and non-toxic to marine organisms, which considerably reduces their environmental impact in the event of a leakage", explains Dirk Fabry, Business Development Manager, Business Unit Marine, Oil & Gas at Klüber Lubrication. "The hydraulic fluids of the Klüberbio LR 9 series contain more than 90 percent of renewable raw materials and their biodegradability is > 60 percent after 28 days."

Due to their very good viscosity-temperature behaviour and low pour point, Klüberbio LR 9 oils help hydraulic systems get easily started even at low temperatures. Therefore, they can be used over a wider temperature range than mineral oils of the same kinematic viscosity. As they are very resistant to hydrolysis, they enable longer component lifetimes and hence better reliability of the hydraulic system even in moist environments. Klüberbio LR 9 oils were especially developed for applications in mobile hydraulic systems in the marine and offshore sectors. They are also products of preference for land-based hydraulic applications in ecologically sensitive environments, for example in hydroelectric power plants or waterway locks.
