Efficient open-gear lubrication with low environmental impact

Innovative new special grease for high-performance open-gear lubrication with low environmental impact

Munich, 4 September 2012 - Environmental authorities and ship operators expect lubricants for open pinion drives on vessels to have good performance characteristics, enabling them to protect the drive against damage, wear and corrosion to ensure a longer useful life while having little environmental impact. Klüber Lubrication developed the new adhesive lubricant Klüberbio LG 39-700 to fulfil these requirements.

"The new Klüberbio LG 39-700 is a real innovation", explains Dirk Fabry, Market Manager Maritime and Offshore Industry at Klüber Lubrication. "There is no other special grease on the world market offering such excellent performance characteristics with a high percentage of renewable and thus environmentally-friendly raw materials we are aware of."

The new adhesive lubricant was especially developed for the lubrication of open gears and pinions driving large anchor winches and the tooth racks of jack-up systems. Furthermore, it is the ideal solution for highly-loaded sliding surfaces that are to operate reliably in cold climate zones and ecologically sensitive areas: The lubricating grease has good low-temperature characteristics and is therefore suitable for open gears or rack-and-pinion drives at very low environmental temperatures down to minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Readily biodegradable
Its highly-viscous base oil made of renewable raw materials being readily biodegradable, Klüberbio LG 39-700 reduces the environmental impact of leakage or lubricant contact with seawater. Its biodegradablility according to OECD 301 B after 28 days is at least 60 per cent. Tests according to CEC TDG-L-103 have even demonstrated more than 70 percent biodegradability after 21 days.

"The ecological characteristics of our lubricant hold considerable benefits for ship owners and operators", explains Fabry. "Klüberbio LG 39-700 allows them to comply with legal water preservation requirements, making an active contribution to environmental protection at the seas while ensuring improved lubrication of very demanding friction points."

Reducing costs with strong performance
Among the performance features that characterise Klüberbio LG 39-700 are very good wear protection, which is achieved with selected solid lubricants and additives, and good corrosion protection, also in contact with seawater, ensuring a high level of protection of the drive and hence a long lifetime. Furthermore, its good adhesion keeps lubricant consumption low. "Klüberbio LG 39-700 is optimised for difficult conditions in maritime environments with its good water resistance and corrosion protection, also under the influence of seawater", says Fabry. The new grease has been used on AHTS ships since the end of 2011 and was recently sold as a lubricant for rack-and-pinion drives on an installation vessel for wind turbines.
