Munich, September 2010 – Even very small oil losses via the propeller shaft seals on the water-side due to wear, accidents or operating errors can cause severe environmental damage if mineral oil-based lubricants are used. Klüber Lubrication has developed Klüberbio RM 2-150, a synthetic, readily biodegradable stern tube oil for the lubrication of propeller bushes and propeller shaft seals of fixed-pitch and controllable-pitch propellers. This special oil is non-toxic to marine organisms (according to OECD 201, 202 and 203 tests) and its biodegradability is at least 60 per cent according to the OECD 301 F test. A leading global manufacturer of propeller shaft seals subjected the new stern tube oil to a dynamic endurance test on a test rig fitted with the original seals, and it passed successfully. Klüberbio RM 2-150 is an environmental-friendly, reliable alternative to conventional mineral oils.
The special oil shows particularly good viscosity-temperature behaviour that facilitates smooth start-up of propellers, even at very low temperatures. A thicker lubricating film ensuring good wear protection forms at higher temperatures. Additionally, Klüberbio RM 2- 150 has a long service life owing to its good stability towards oxidation, hydrolysis and temperatures. Klüberbio RM 2-150 is miscible with mineral oil-based stern tube oils for easy changeover.
In the development of this new readily biodegradable special oil, Klüber cooperated closely with its affiliated companies SIMRIT and Merkel Freudenberg Fluidtechnik, both leading suppliers of shaft seals and profiled seals to the maritime industry. Like Klüber Lubrication, these two companies belong to the Freudenberg Group. Together, the three companies are therefore in a unique position to match elastomers and lubricating oils for the taxing requirements of propeller manufacturers and shipowners.
