Munich, 2 July 2012 - Klüber Lubrication will be exhibiting at the SMM in hall 3, stand 309, under the motto "Powerful, naturally". The focus will be on new, readily biodegradable speciality lubricants for ships, offshore rigs and other marine applications. The development of eco-friendly, highly efficient speciality lubricants especially made for the extreme conditions prevailing at sea benefits substantially from the vast level of experience of the tribology experts at Klüber Lubrication. As a result, they create powerful products contributing to less impact on the environment as well as longer maintenance intervals and component lifetimes.
Eco-friendly synthetic hydraulic fluids
New additions to Klüber Lubrication's portfolio are hydraulic fluids of the Klüberbio LR 9 series meeting the stringent environmental requirements of the European Eco Label. These synthetic oils are readily biodegradable and non-toxic, which makes a risk of leakage much less threatening to the environment. Klüberbio LR 9 oils are intended for use in mobile hydraulic systems in the marine and offshore sectors. They are also products of preference for land-based hydraulic applications in ecologically sensitive environments, for example in hydroelectric power plants or waterway locks.
Readily biodegradable special grease
Klüberbio M 72-82 was developed as a readily biodegradable grease especially for rolling bearings. It is highly resistant to water, protects components against corrosion, and due to its good adhesion enables long relubrication intervals. Klüberbio M 72-82 should be the preferred choice wherever contact with water cannot be excluded. The grease is also highly suitable for low-temperature applications.
Open-gear lubricant with low environmental impact
The new adhesive lubricant Klüberbio LG 39-700 was especially developed for the lubrication of open gears and pinions driving large anchor winches and the tooth racks of jack-up systems. It is also ideal for highly loaded sliding surfaces that are required to operate reliably even in cold climates and in ecologically sensitive areas. Made from renewable raw materials, its highly viscous base oil is readily biodegradable, leading to a much smaller environmental impact in the event of leakage or contact with sea water.
"Both environmental authorities and ship operators increasingly call for biodegradable lubricants to be used in all lubrication points on a ship that can get in contact with water", explains Dirk Fabry, Market Manager Marine & Offshore at Klüber Lubrication. "Consequently, the development of eco-compatible, highly efficient speciality lubricants for the marine industry is a focal theme of Klüber Lubrication."
Besides the most recent product developments, Klüber Lubrication will be presenting further speciality lubricants for marine applications at the SMM 2012. This includes the recently launched synthetic gear oils for thrusters and rudder propellers as well as eco-friendly stern tube oils especially designed for the lubrication of bushes and shaft seals of fixed-pitch and controllable-pitch propellers.
When developing new oils, Klüber Lubrication cooperates very closely with its affiliated companies SIMRIT and Merkel Freudenberg Fluidtechnic. Both are leading manufacturers of shaft seals and profiled seals supplying the marine industry. The three companies are therefore in the unique position to optimally harmonise elastomers and lubricating oils. At the SMM 2012, the experts from Klüber Lubrication will be pleased to answer all questions visitors may have regarding the subject of tribology at the high seas.
