Success: CO2 target -75% for 2025 already achieved in 2022!

Klüber Lubrication further progresses on its path to become climate neutral. In 2022, CO2 -equivalent emissions were reduced by an outstanding 76.1 percent compared to the year 2019, thus exceeding the company’s objectives earlier than initially planned.

“As a sustainability team, we are really happy about the result achieved and take it as a further motivation to intensify our efforts. One key learning to us is the fact that even ambitious objectives can be achieved if the company and all employees are committed to the goals. We are confident being able to contribute to the UN's 1.5-degree Celsius target in our sphere of influence”, says global Sustainability Manager Markus Hermann. "As a sustainability team, we want to show & give hope: reducing CO2 emissions works!"

CO2eq emissions* from solvents have now been reduced by 94 %. After great successes in reducing energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020 and 2021, a certain stagnation has occurred here. Therefore, it is important to focus more on these emissions again and to achieve a breakthrough especially in the area of Scope 1 (gas, diesel) through new ideas and pilot projects. The values are calculated according to Scope 1 and 2 of the "Greenhouse Gas Protocol", and include all direct, i.e. self-generated emissions, as well as indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity, at all production and sales locations.

"The next milestone for us is to reduce our CO2 -equivalent emissions by 90 percent, which we want to accomplish by 2030. Let’s see if we can achieve that earlier again," says Markus Hermann.​ With all the joy of what we have achieved, we realize that the challenge is much bigger than initially anticipated. In addition to the reduced emissions at our sales and production sites (Scope 1+2), we also tackle the indirect emissions in the entire value chain – from wells to disposal or ideally to minimize recycling – together with suppliers and customers (Scope 3). Here, too, Klüber Lubrication has developed a strategy with distinct goals. “The challenge is huge”, according to Hermann. But he remains optimistic: “We’re not looking at the obstacles first, we’re looking at opportunities and solutions. This is part of our DNA. Let’s just do it!"
