Food & Beverage Lubricant Solutions for 3 Chain Challenges

Have you checked your chains lately? Used to drive conveyors and packaging lines, chains are easily overlooked in food-and-beverage plants.

Lubricants protect links, plates, rollers and other chain components from corrosion and wear. But temperature, humidity and improper application can degrade the protection that lubricants provide, resulting in loss of efficiency, breakdowns and hygiene problems. There are three main chain lubrication challenges that maintenance personnel should be aware of.

  1. Temperature:
At temperatures between 350 – 500 degrees F, common chain lubricants begin to break down. To handle these conditions, different types of base oils and solid additives are used, such as graphite and molybdenum. However, Klüberfood NH1 CH 2 Plus oil is an advanced synthetic oil comprised of base oils and special additives designed for excellent wear protection at high temperatures. That’s because the evaporation losses of Klüberfood NH1 CH 2 Plus are lower compared to ester oils commonly used in high-temperature applications. The low evaporation losses and high oxidation stability extend relubrication intervals and reduce oil quantities, saving time and money.
  2. Humidity:
High humidity levels and contact with water during wash downs are common in food and beverage plants. Moisture in the environment can corrode chains, compromising chain durability and food safety. To protect chain components from corrosion, Klüberfood NH1 C 8-80 penetrates chain surfaces and components in a humid environment. The result is significant friction reduction, wear protection and fretting-corrosion protection, particularly in the highly stressed pin/bush areas.
  3. Application Method:
As chain speed varies, conventionally applied general-purpose chain oils tend to drip, compromising lubrication and food safety. The solution is Klübersynth NH1 4-68 Foam Spray, a synthetic oil-based multifunctional fluid spray that is applied as a spray foam. The foam holds the lubricant at the friction point to provide excellent adhesiveness, which reduces wear.

These three lubricants are all NSF H1 certified to ISO 21469 standards. With high performance food-grade chain oils from Klüber Lubrication, food and beverage plants can save time and money with optimum chain lubrication in challenging conditions.
