1983 - In Klüber we thrust

"Thrust 2" sets a new world record for land vehicle speed: 1046 kph - that's a 7500 rpm wheel bearing speed!

Speeds like this send any wheel spinning - and any tribologist: The peripheral speed at the guide flanges of the tapered roller bearings is more than twice that which is permitted for grease lubrication. Extreme centrifugal forces pose the risk of lubricant starvation between rollers and inner guide flanges. Using oil is just as problematic: at full speed, the oil is forced towards the wide ends of the tapered rollers, resulting in excessive pressures, high temperatures and damage to the seals.

Klüber provided a lightweight solution: only 12 grams per bearing of ISOFLEX TOPAS NB 52. Following the running-in, the bearings were tested at 8000 rpm for three minutes. The bearing temperature rose by a mere 1K - and three minutes is much longer than any record-breaking race will take.
