The lubricant consumption quantities depend solely on the requirements of the drive, irrespective of the lubrication system used, i.e. the lubricant pumps and their operating mode. In principle, it can be assumed that the dimensions of the contact surface to be lubricated (single or double pinion drive), the size of the drive (diameter and width) and the peripheral speed are decisive in determining the lubricant quantity needed.
The mass temperature of both pinion and gear rim also influence the required lubricant quantity, as do several other factors. Based on many years of experience in the lubrication of large girth gear drives, Klüber Lubrication has developed a consumption and cost calculator. Flank width was chosen as reference parameter because it is best suitable to reflect the specific power transmission found in a particular drive.
Note: the consumption quantities determined with this calculator apply exclusively to Klüber adhesive lubricants containing graphite with base oil viscosities 680, 1000 and 2000, as well as to Klüberfluid C-F 3 ULTRA, and to average gear drives with a module of up to approx. 50 mm. For modules over 50 mm consumption quantities may be higher due to the higher absorption capacity of the teeth.
Please bear in mind that even drives of the same type (same kind of machinery operating with the same power) may differ in their lubricant consumption because operating conditions (temperature, vibrations and any defects that might be present) cannot be compared directly. It is the job of the maintenance experts responsible for the drive to determine the individually required lubricant quantities through specific inspections of the lubrication condition.
