Selection and testing of consistent special lubricants for motor vehicles

The lubricant is an integral design element in many vehicle components. Wherever relative movement occurs between machine elements in contact, special lubricants – fluid, consistent, pasty or dry – are used to reduce wear and friction. On the basis of case studies, this article specifies the criteria which have to be taken into consideration when selecting and testing lubricants for vehicle components and shows which are today's most promising types of lubricants for the requirements to be expected in the automotive industry in the future.
