Klüber Summit NGL series: a wellness cure for compressors in crude oil refineries

Piston compressors might be termed the heart of any refinery or indeed any petrochemical process: if they fail, so will the plant as a whole. Depending on the plant size, the damage may amount up to 50,000 Euro - every hour! The cause of such compressor problems may lie with insufficient lubrication, which, however, could be prevented by a comprehensive package offered by Klüber Lubrication: on-site analysis, comprehensive consulting and evaluation of the situation, selection of a suitable lubricating oil, optimised injection volumes and, most importantly, an oil series especially developed for such applications: Klüber Summit NGL.

In refineries, hydrogen is among other things used for the desulphurisation of fuel. The process gas consisting of H2 and minor quantities of hydrocarbons is compressed to approx. 70 to 150 bar. Under pressure, many of these gas constituents will dissolve in the lubricating oil, which may lead to higher wear in the compressor cylinder. As a consequence, too high oil injection volumes are used in many compressors, which not only increases oil consumption but may also damage the process catalyst and produce deposits in downstream heat exchangers and valves, which in some cases may even fracture.

The specialists of Klüber Lubrication use their expertise and experience of many years to counteract such effects. They analyse the gas as well as the operating conditions to determine the drop in oil viscosity to be expected and the required oil injection volume. If the compressor operator then opts for Klüber Summit NGL, he has every reason to be happy. Since the tendency of hydrocarbons to dissolve is lower in a polyglycol oil, the service life of piston rings, sealing packages and compressor valves may increase up to four-fold compared with mineral oils. At the same time, oil consumption and oil carryover may be reduced by up to 50 %. So if you care for the well-being of your process gas compressor, contact us and ask for our consulting.
