Winner on points In a basic research study conducted by TU Chemnitz (University of Applied Science), UNIMOLY RAP from Klüber Lubrication delivers the best results for forming higher-strength aluminium alloys Because of its low density, aluminium is a popular choice for design engineers when it comes to minimizing the amount of masses being moved in a particular application. But the possible options offered by this innovative material have by no means been exhausted. TU Chemnitz has now completed a project investigating a complex new process for cold massive forming of higher-strength aluminium alloys. This forming function alters the aluminium’s micro-structure, creating a nano-structured lattice that exhibits unusual combinations of properties, such as high mechanical strength coupled with good ductility. The new process supplies maximized degrees of deformation (several 100 %), without the material failing. One conceivable application is high-strength aluminium screws. As is the case in numerous applications, it was found that the lubricant exercises a significant influence, in this case on the result of aluminium forming. The researchers were seeking to minimize the press force required for the forming process, and to effectively prevent adhesion both at the contact surface between the steel tool and the aluminium and between the tool and the plunger. For this purpose, they were looking for a lubricant that exhibits both good lubrication performance and also good adhesion. The fact that pressures of up to 500 MPa are encountered during the forming process didn’t make things any easier. Following completion of the trials, staff at TU Chemnitz confirmed that the UNIMOLY RAP lubricating paste from Klüber Lubrication delivers the best results in forming processes and meets the requirements involved.
