Be cool - High-performance gear oil Klübersynth GEM 4-460 N from Klüber Lubrication reduces the bearing temperature in roller presses running in concrete factories

In the manufacture of concrete the right content percentage of each base material used is of decisive importance. Any non-conformance in this regard will affect the quality of the concrete, which is just as undesirable as for example a discontinued concrete manufacturing process due to failure of the roller press. In such presses the two counterrotating rollers comminuting the base materials are each driven by a gear. To be on the safe side, the operator of an Austrian concrete factory has a third gear in reserve in order be able to quickly exchange them if a damage occurs.

Due to repeated malfunction during operation, thought was also given to the gears of the press. Extensive oil analyses carried out for monitoring the gear condition showed an elevated wear rate and carbon deposits in the gear oil. In addition, the gear temperatures reached 65°C, and even 90°C in exposed areas.

In view of these results and the findings of Klüber Lubrication Austria, the factory decided to replace the CLP mineral oil used so far with the synthetic high-performance gear oil Klübersynth GEM 4-460 N from Klüber Lubrication in order to ensure a reliable and trouble-free production without gear failure.

Apart from the higher wear protection and clean operation thanks to the use of this synthetic oil, the gear temperatures dropped considerably. Oil temperature measurements showed a clear reduction of the gear housing temperature, in one case even to 44°C.

As a result of the temperature reduction, energy costs in the concrete plant will drop as well in the next few months.
